The Perks of Being a Foodservice Technician

/ Tech Tips, Thought Leadership / June 19

Whether you’re a service company trying to recruit new team members or someone trying to make a career choice, it’s important to check out the benefits a job has to offer. Sean from General Parts shared with us the perks of being a foodservice technician so you can make an informed career choice.

Sean is both a certified master technician and trainer at General Parts who has years of experience with both hot side equipment and HVACR. The time he’s spent in the field has given him knowledge on diagnostics, maintenance and more that he gets to share with his students. Besides sharing his technical input, he’s happy to share why he enjoys being a technician and offers inspiration on why you should choose to be one too.

Who Should Become a Foodservice Tech

Not sure if you’re the right fit for this career path? Ask yourself if any of these sound like you:

  • Are you interested in how things work and discovering new things?

  • Are you looking for a career rather than just a job?

  • Do you love to learn?

Benefits of Being a Foodservice Tech

There’s a lot of great reasons for someone to choose to become a technician.

  • You get to work with your hands by fixing and diagnosing equipment.

  • The job you’re doing greatly helps other people and can really make them happy. Fixing that vital piece of equipment and getting their business running again can make you thei absolute favorite person.

  • With making the customer happy by finishing the job, you also get the satisfaction of a completed task.

  • There’s a lot of variety in being a technician. With the different types of equipment in both hot side and HVACR, you won’t be doing the same task on repeat. Location and equipment will change and whether you’re actually doing the fix or just diagnosing will be different each time.

  • If you greatly enjoy working independently, you often will get to do so. There will be occasions where you get to work with others too so you get a nice mix.

  • There’s always opportunity for growth as a tech. Sean himself put in his time and has moved into a position where he spends more time getting to train and other techs have even moved into the office setting of a service company.

  • You have lots of chances to travel and relocate. If you want to move or just need a change of scenery, oftentimes a company may have other branches in different states so you can move more freely.

If you’re thinking of becoming a tech, Sean recommends taking as much time to learn as much as you can about a variety of different equipment. The more you know, the more valuable you’ll be.

Why Train to Be a Tech at General Parts

General Parts has training available for people looking to become a tech. There’s a lot of great perks to getting educated from them. You’ll be able to get classroom and hands-on experience while getting paid. This is a great chance for people not able to go to a technical school since rather than paying for your education you’re earning your paycheck to learn.

You also are hired on at General Parts after you pass the class so you won’t have to worry about trying to find a job.
