APW Wyott Toaster Troubleshooting
APW Wyott’s line of commercial conveyor toasters makes the whole toasting process easy and even. That’s why when there’s a problem, you’ve got to figure it out quick to get your bread toasted. Take a look through our APW Wyott troubleshooting guide to solve your problems and get your toaster back on track.
This guide is for the XPRS and M Series toasters.
XPRS Series Troubleshooting
Problem: Unit isn’t toasting
- Cause
- Toaster hasn’t warmed up thoroughly
- Power switch isn’t on full power
- Conveyor speed is wrong
- Solution
- Let toaster warm up at least 5 minutes
- Change power switch to full power
- Adjust conveyor speed
Problem: Toasting is uneven
- Cause
- Conveyor speed is wrong
- Product is being loaded too far to the side
- Solution
- Adjust conveyor speed to a slower one
- Place product between end links on conveyor
Problem: Product is sticking to the conveyor or the slide
- Cause
- Butter or spread was used on product
- Conveyor surface has oily residue stuck to it
- Product is too moist or doughy
- Product isn’t thawed or defrosted
- Solution
- Do not add spread to product before toasting
- Clean according to daily cleaning instructions
- Use different food product
- Thaw or defrost the product
Problem: Toaster has no power
- Cause
- No power to receptacle
- Toaster’s unplugged
- Loose power connection
- Power switch is off
- Solution
- Check the circuit breaker
- Plug in toaster
- Check power connections
- Turn power switch on
Problem: Toaster won’t heat
- Causes
- Connections are loose
- Power switch is faulty
- Element is burned out
- Solution
- Check connections
- Have power switch replaced
- Have element replaced
Problem: Toasting is lighter under peak loads
- Cause
- Inadequate speed setting
- Product is too moist
- Product is too cold
- Toaster’s cavity temperature is being quenched
- Solution
- Reduce conveyor speed
- Use different food product
- Let product warm up to room temperature
- Add 1” or more spacing between each product
Problem: Conveyor won’t move
- Cause
- No power to toaster
- Conveyor links are minding
- Drive chain is too tight or loose
- Bad or loose connection between the speed control and conveyor motor
- Conveyor motor isn’t working
- Speed control isn’t working
- Solution
- Check the circuit breaker
- Check conveyor for any bent links
- Adjust drive train
- Check connections
- Have motor replaced
- Have speed control replaced
M-Series Troubleshooting
These troubleshooting tips are applicable for models like M-83, M-830, M-91, M-95 and subsequent models in the series.
Problem: Unit isn’t toasting
- Cause
- Temperature setting is wrong
- Wrong oil used
- Wrong oil application
- Bread surface is cupping too much
- Solution
- Set thermostat to 4000 (number 8) and let toaster warm up for 20 minutes
- Make sure you’re only using coconut oil per OEM recommendation
- Make sure the sun surface has an even layer of oil
- Use fresher bread or use a better cutting of bread
Problem: Buns aren’t toasting evenly
- Cause
- Part of the bun is toasting and the other part is colorless and dry
- Bread surface is cupping too much
- Not enough pressure
- Problem
- Wrong oil application—evenly coat bun with butter
- Use fresher bread or use a better cutting of bread
- Adjust conveyor hanging brackets
Problem: Buns are sticking to the grill
- Cause
- Wrong oil used
- Baked-on oil residue on grill surface
- Buns are too doughy or moist
- Bun weights are too slick and slide off the bun
- Buns are too cold
- Solution
- Check your operator’s manual on how to correctly use oil
- Clean the grill surface during daily cleaning
- Set thermostat to 4000 (number 8) and let toaster warm up for 20 minutes
- Adjust bun weights
- Thaw or defrost buns before toasting
Problem: Toaster has no power
- Cause
- No power at the wall receptacle
- Plug is disconnected
- Issue with relay (on M-83 model)
- Issue with main switch
- Circuit breaker has tripped
- Solution
- Check breaker panel and fuse
- Check the plug and plug in if necessary
- Check the relay output (on M-83 model)
- Check the switch and make sure it’s on
- Check circuit breaker and reset if necessary
Problem: Grill won’t heat and the conveyor and butter roller are working
- Cause
- Loose connection at power cord
- Loose connection at control
- Thermostat is faulty
- Element is faulty or burned out
- Solution
- Check connection in the control panel
- Check the control connection
- Have thermostat replaced
- Have element replaced
Problem: Conveyor and butter roller aren’t working but the grill is
- Cause
- Switch has loose connection
- Switch is burned out
- Motors are defective
- Solution
- Check the switch for any loose or bad connections
- Have switch replaced
- Have motors replaced
Problem: Butter roller isn’t turning, but motor is working
- Cause
- Misalignment with the notched end of the butter roller shaft and the motor drive
- Wrong end of shaft is inserted into the spring-loaded socket
- Solution
- Realign butter roll shaft with the motor drive
- Realign butter roll and shaft assembly’s notched end to the motor drive
Problem: Conveyor won’t move, but conveyor motor and butter roller are working
- Cause
- Drive gears aren’t engaged
- Bun weights are too binding
- Linkage is too binding and causing the drive motor to not turn
- Solution
- Reinstall conveyor and make sure drive gears are engaged
- Check clearance of bun weights and adjust as needed
- Inspect conveyor for any bent links
Problem: Conveyor won’t move
- Cause
- Connection is loose between the switch and conveyor motor
- Conveyor motor is burned out
- Solution
- Check the conveyor motor’s circuit switch for a loose or bad connection
- Have motor replaced
