If you see the error code with the little wrench followed by HI or Lo pop up on the screen, your first instinct might be to panic, especially when there might be hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars holding in your refrigerator. No need to take out your inhaler just yet. Whether you have a temperature crisis on your hands or hear an odd noise every now and then, Parts Town has an Aladdin Temp-Rite air curtain refrigerator troubleshooting guide to help you take a deep breath.

Cabinet Temperature Too High

It’s never a good surprise when your refrigerator informs you its holding temperature is too high. Luckily, the troubleshooting fix is generally straightforward, inexpensive and doesn’t take a lot of time:

  • Set point temperature too high – Check that your set point temperature isn’t exceeding 45℉. If you need to change the setpoint, press and hold the “Prg” button for 5 seconds or until “ST” displays on the screen. Then, press the “Set” button and use the arrows to toggle through to the desired temperature. Next, press the “Set” button again to save the new temperature setting. Press “Prg” again to exit.
    • Note: The factory preset temperature is 34℉.
  • Poor ventilation – Overloading your air curtain refrigerator can block vents, preventing the air from circulating and causing the core temperature to rise. Make sure items are placed away from the vents to improve cooling efficiency.
  • Frost buildup – Frost buildup on the evaporator coils can reduce the cooling effectiveness. You can force a defrost by pressing and holding the “def” button for 5 seconds or until the melting snowflake symbol appears on the display.
  • Defrost in process – Your commercial refrigerator might be in the middle of a defrost. You will be able to tell if there’s a melting snowflake symbol displayed next to the temperature. In this case, close the door and wait 20 minutes or press the “def” button for 5 seconds to stop the defrost cycle.
  • Dirty condenser – It’s a good idea to regularly clean the air curtain refrigerator condenser unit to prevent dirt and debris from affecting its cooling performance.
  • Faulty door gasket – A door gasket with cracks or fissures might not create that airtight seal that locks in cold air. These leaks can cause your refrigerator to work harder than normal, increasing the temperature and wear and tear on the unit. The best thing to do is replace the door gasket.

Condensing Unit Running All the Time

If you’re worried because you hear your condenser running more frequently or for extensive periods, chances are it’s no big deal and only requires a little bit of attention:

  • Refrigerant leak – If the cooling system doesn’t have enough refrigerant, it has to work harder to achieve the same results. Please call an authorized service technician and immediately leave the room if you suspect a leak.
    • Warning: Do not touch or attempt to clean up the refrigerant yourself, as it could result in injury or death.
  • Control contacts stuck closed – If this happens, you’ll need the help of an authorized service technician to help troubleshoot the issue.
  • Loaded too much hot product – Loading too much hot food product into your commercial Aladdin Temp-Rite air curtain refrigerator to work overtime to compensate for the drop in temperature.
  • Frequent door openings – You might notice the droning hum of the condensing unit gearing up during restocking. Try limiting the number of times you open the door and never leave it propped open.
  • Iced evaporator coil – Frost buildup on the evaporator coils can reduce the cooling effectiveness. You can force a defrost by pressing and holding the “def” button for 5 seconds or until the melting snowflake symbol appears on the display.
  • Dirty condenser – It’s a good idea to clean the condenser coil regularly to prevent dirt and debris from affecting its cooling performance.
  • Dirty filter – Like the dirty condenser coil, a dirty filter can also restrict airflow and increase the temperature, putting extra stress on the condensing unit. The best thing to do is clean or replace the filter.
  • Frost buildup – Frost buildup on the evaporator coils can reduce the cooling effectiveness. You can force a defrost by pressing and holding the “def” button for 5 seconds or until the melting snowflake symbol appears on the display.
  • Faulty door gasket – A door gasket with cracks or fissures might not create that airtight seal that locks in cold air. The best thing to do is replace the door gasket.

Noisy Condensing Unit

If your fridge is making some unusual noises, check out these Aladdin Temp-Rite air curtain refrigerator troubleshooting tips for quieter operation:

  • Loose parts – Sometimes, normal operational vibrations can knock a screw loose. Look for any loose mountings or parts and tighten them with a screwdriver or wrench.
  • Tubing – Take a peek behind the curtains to see if your refrigerator’s tubing is rattling against another part.
  • Bent fan blade – A bent fan blade can create an annoying clanking, scraping or buzzing noise. You’ll have to replace it to eliminate the distraction.
  • Worn fan motor bearing – On the other hand, a grinding, squealing, rattling or humming noise could indicate the bearing is shot and it’s time for a new fan motor.

Error Codes

If you spot any of these error codes on your screen, you might have to raise or lower the temperature on your unit. Otherwise, you’ll need to contact an authorized service technician to check the thermistor or door switch.
