Armstrong Air Heat Pump Troubleshooting

Your Armstrong Air heat pump works day in and day out to keep your home at the ideal temperature. Because it brings your space so much comfort, it’s important to recognize any signs that it’s not functioning correctly. If you’ve started noticing odd behavior from your heat pump unit, check out our guide on the possible cause and solutions before contacting an authorized HVAC technician.

Problem: Heat Pump Isn’t Cooling

Causes

  1. Tripped circuit breaker
  2. Incorrect thermostat setting
  3. Thermostat is turned off
  4. Blocked air filter

Solutions

  1. Check the circuit breaker and reset if necessary
  2. Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL
  3. Be sure that the thermostat is turned on
  4. Inspect the air handler or furnace filter for any blockages or excessive debris. Replace as needed.

Problem: Heat Pump Isn’t Heating

Causes

  1. Gas isn’t on
  2. Unit is turned off or unplugged
  3. Tripped circuit breaker
  4. Incorrect thermostat setting
  5. Thermostat is turned off
  6. Blocked air filter

Solutions

  1. Check the gas valve and shutoff valves that lead to the heat pump. If any of them are off, contact your gas company to have them turned on.
  2. Make sure that your unit is turned on and plugged in
  3. Check the circuit breaker and reset if necessary
  4. Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL
  5. Be sure that the thermostat is turned on
  6. Inspect the air handler or furnace filter for any blockages or excessive debris. Replace as needed.

Problem: No airflow into Unit

Causes

  1. Filter is blocked
  2. Coil is dirty and caused system to freeze
  3. Ductwork is blocked or dirty

Solutions

  1. Check all filters in your HVAC system. Clean and replace as needed.
  2. Follow these steps for a frozen system:
    1. Step 1—Check for any signs of water below your unit. 
    2. Step 2—Feel for any cold spots on the surface of the indoor coil enclosure. 
    3. Step 3—If you notice any of these signs, turn off the thermostat for 1-3 hours to defrost the system. 
    4. Step 4—If the problem persists, contact an authorized HVAC technician.
  3. Check the indoor unit to make sure the blower is running, then check for airflow at different vents in your house. If you do not feel any air coming out of the vents or indoor unit, contact an authorized HVAC technician.

Problem: Unit is Running All The Time

Cause

Thermostat is set too low or high.

Solution

Adjust your thermostat on days with extreme weather conditions. This will help prevent the unit from overworking. If this doesn’t help, contact an authorized HVAC technician.

Problem: Utility Bills are Higher Than Normal

Causes

  1. System isn’t reaching the set thermostat temperature
  2. Your utility company has increased their rates
  3. Another new appliance is using a lot of power

Solutions

  1. Adjust your thermostat on days with extreme weather conditions. This will help prevent the unit from overworking and ultimately causing your bills to be higher.
  2. Call your local utility company to check if rates have increased
  3. Consider turning off the new appliance when not in use
