chef in a small kitchen - galley kitchen maintenance checklist

Much like stationary kitchens, galley kitchens need regular maintenance and cleaning. Since creating a mess is so much easier when out on open water, you’ll want to pay special attention to our galley kitchen maintenance checklist so you reach all the spots that need to get hit for a truly clean space.

Where to Begin with Galley Kitchen Maintenance?

In addition to checking your equipment and appliances one by one, following our kitchen maintenance checklist, it’s important to ensure they are all thoroughly cleaned as well as the areas around them. Since galley kitchens are a bit tighter than most commercial spaces, you’ll be done in no time. Here are a few places that need special attention to get you started.

  • Ovens and stoves – Keeping these clean as you go will save you a major deep clean in the long run. If you notice a spill, wipe it up immediately and make sure you note that it needs to be properly cleaned when you’re finished prepping or cooking.
  • Refrigerators and freezers – Check the interior temperatures to be sure the food is being stored at safe temperatures. Also, it’s important to regularly check the fridge for spills and clean it out to avoid spoiled food sitting in there and contaminating other food.
  • Microwaves – Just like in a commercial kitchen space, you’ll want to wipe down the inside of the microwave. Things tend to spill and splatter all over the inside and you don’t want those food particles mixing with a new dish.
  • Cabinets and drawers – It’s also important to check the cabinets and drawers for spills, crumbs and even dust. The last thing you need is dusty or dirty cooking equipment. Be sure to clear out and wipe down these areas in your galley kitchen to ensure a sanitary work space.

Galley Kitchen Cleaning Supplies Must-Haves

  • Keep up on the degreaser – Don’t wait for excessive buildup. When there’s grease on the stovetop, inside the microwave or on the counters, be sure to hit it with a degreaser and clean it up as you go. This will help you avoid bigger issues later on.
  • Heavy-duty cleaners are a must – No matter if you’re dealing with blood and guts from fresh caught fish or messy prep from other dishes, you’ll want to have a heavy-duty cleaner on hand to dig through the deep stains and possible stuck-on debris from meal prep on a boat.
  • Room deodorizer – After a good scrub-down of the kitchen, you’ll want a room deodorizer to keep things fresh.
