Garland fryer cleaning doesn’t have to be the dread of every work day’s end when you know the exact step-by-step procedure to maximize your efforts, reduce wasted time and get you clocking off early – without cutting corners. In this short guide, you’ll learn how to clean a Garland fryer's interior and three different types of exterior materials after every use.

Cleaning a Garland Fryer Before Use 

You’ve just taken the fryer out of the box, assembled it and got it approved for operation – but hold your horses! Before you start frying up a storm of chicken nuggets and french fries, you’ll need to remove the protective coating lining the tank’s interior. Here’s how you clean a Garland fryer before it’s first use:

  • Step 1. Turn off the power – Locate the power service disconnect switch and turn it to the off position.
  • Step 2. Remove the frying baskets – Take out the frying baskets and set them aside.
  • Step 3. Raise the heating elements – Lift the element handle until the heating elements are fully raised. 
  • Step 4. Remove the fryer tank – With the frying baskets and heating elements now out of the way, you can go ahead and remove the fryer tank.
  • Step 5. Clean the fryer tank – You can start your Garland fryer cleaning with a special fry tank cleaner or a soap, vinegar or baking powder solution. If using a special fryer tank cleaning agent, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Otherwise, apply the soap, vinegar or baking powder solution to the interior of the tank and rinse with clean, hot water. Be sure to dry the fryer tank completely before reinstalling.
  • Step 6. Reinstall the fryer tank – Reinstall the tank to the fryer, remembering to return the frying baskets and heating elements to their original position.
  • Step 7. Close the drain valve – On some units, the tank may have an optional drain valve. Make sure this is closed before adding oil.
  • Step 8. Turn on the power – First, make sure the circuit breakers and toggle switch on the fryer are switched to the “OFF” position. With this assurance, you can now go ahead and turn the power on in the service disconnect box.

Frequency: Make sure to clean the fryer tank regularly with the Frymaster Liquid Fryer Cleaner or any other approved commercial fryer tank cleaner. 

Garland Fryer Interior Cleaning 

To maximize the life of your fryer, you should aim to filter the frying compound and clean the fry pot as instructed below at least once a day:

  • Step 1. Filter the frying compound – Make sure to filter the frying compound at least once a day, if not more, depending on how much breaded food you’re frying.
  • Step 2. Drain the frying compound – Before you can get at the insides with a cloth, you’ll need to drain the frying compound. That means screwing the drain pipe into the drain valve and putting a stock pot underneath to catch the contents.
  • Step 3. Wipe down the fry pot – Take a clean cloth soaked in commercial fryer/griddle cleaner and wipe down the interior. Rinse with hot water and dry with a clean cloth. The manufacturer recommends boiling out the fryer at least once a week as per the instructions on the commercial fryer/griddle cleaner’s bottle.
  • Step 4. Wipe down the controls – With a clean cloth, wipe down the fryer’s controls and the door’s interior and exterior, taking care to dry thoroughly. 
  • Step 5. Clean the basket hanger – Remove and clean the basket hanger, making sure not to disturb the grease cover and automatic gas valve.
  • Step 6. Replace the frying compound – Once all is said and done, you may now return the filtered or new oil to the fry pot.

Garland Fryer Exterior Cleaning 

Garland fryers may have up to three different types of surfaces that you should pay attention to while cleaning. Each surface has its own set of cleaning and care instructions to prevent pitting, scratching and rusting. As a rule of thumb, you should clean your fryer’s exterior after each use to prevent oil stains and maintain a hygienic cooking surface. And most importantly, for your safety, allow time for the unit to cool down before attempting to clean its exterior. 

Stainless Steel Surfaces 

For stainless steel surfaces, clean with a mild detergent and a soft cloth and rinse with a sponge and disinfectant. Don’t forget to thoroughly dry the exterior with a clean, soft cloth. But what about those tougher, dried-on messes that seem to be busting the cleaning utensils more than they are the stains?

Non-metallic scouring pads or stainless steel, wood or plastic cleaning tools are all manufacturer-approved to use on stainless steel surfaces as long as you always scrub in the direction of the grain.

Warning: Do not use steel scrapers or knives, as this may scratch the metal and cause it to rust. 

Painted & Enameled Surfaces 

Garland fryer cleaning for painted and enameled surfaces can be completed with a mild detergent, rinsed with hot water, and dried with a soft, clean cloth. For stubborn stains, don’t be afraid to use a scouring pad. Also, be sure to wipe off spills as they happen to prevent staining. 

Brushed Chrome or Nickel Surfaces 

For brushed chrome or nickel surfaces, wash with a mild detergent or soap and rinse with hot water. Don’t forget to dry with a fresh cloth to prevent mineral deposits.
