Gaylord exhaust hoods maintain air quality and ensure kitchen safety. Although issues with these units are rare, these Gaylord exhaust hood troubleshooting tips will help you solve issues with your unit quickly and easily.

These directions are for EL, ELX and ELX-UV series models.

Ventilator Not Exhausting Properly

  • The fan isn’t performing properly / a Gaylord balancing damper isn’t adjusted properly - Call a licensed technician to remedy the issue.
  • Heavy grease accumulation in the filters/extractors - Remove the filters/extractors and check for grease accumulation. If there is grease buildup, clean the filters/extractors.
  • Other exhaust systems are tied into the exhaust hood system - Inspect the duct system to make sure no other exhausts, such as dishwasher hoods, feed into the system. If multiple systems are tied together, schedule an appointment with a licensed technician to solve the issue.
  • Make-up air diffusers aren’t placed properly - Schedule an appointment with a technician to remedy the issue.
  • Inadequate make-up air - Contact a licensed technician to address the issue.
  • Screen over exhaust fan discharge - Call a licensed technician to service the unit.
  • Exhaust fan discharge pointed into the prevailing winds or downward onto the roof - Schedule an appointment with an authorized technician to solve the issue.

Poor Grease Extraction

  • Grease accumulation within the filters/extractors is allowing grease to be pulled through - Remove the filters/extractors, inspect for grease accumulation and clean if necessary.
  • Ventilator is exhausting too much air, pulling grease through the filters/extractors - Call a licensed technician to address the issue.
  • Ventilator is exhausting too little air, allowing grease to be pulled through the filters/extractors - Make an appointment with an authorized technician to solve the issue.
  • Fan drive belt is slipping - Call an authorized technician to service the unit.
  • Fan is running in reverse - Contact an electrician to wire the unit correctly.

Exhaust Fan Is Turned On, But Does Not Come On

  • Overload protector on the magnetic starter has tripped - First, push the “Reset” button on the magnetic starter, and then turn the fan switch to the Fan On position.
  • The Hands Off/Automatic (HOA) magnetic starter switch’s selector switch was moved from its automatic position - Flip the selector to the automatic position.
  • Exhaust fan circuit breaker is tripped - Reset the circuit breaker.
  • A fuse or fuses in the fused disconnect switch for the exhaust fan blew out - Contact a license technician to service the unit.
  • Exhaust fan On/Off switch was not wired properly - Call a service technician to remedy the issue.

Exhaust Fan Is Turned On, But No Air Pulled Through Ventilator

  • Balancing damper is closed or closed down too far - Make an appointment with an authorized technician to solve the issue.
  • Electric balancing damper is not reopening when the fan restarts - Contact a licensed technician to service the unit.
