Goodman furnaces are reliable and great to keep spaces warm when freezing weather hits, and is the difference between freezing and staying comfortable. Below we have a Goodman furnace troubleshooting guide to help you resolve the issue before contacting a repair service. Check out our Resource Center for other HVAC guides on troubleshooting and preventative maintenance.

Furnace Not Turning On or Heating

  • Unit is turned off - First make sure that your thermostat is on and the furnace is not turned off. If those are both on, then move on to the next troubleshooting solutions to try and resolve the issue.
  • Check fuse box - If your Goodman furnace isn’t turning on, then you should check your circuit breaker or fuse box. Be sure to make sure the fuse hasn’t blown or the circuit hasn’t been tripped.
  • Look at thermostat - If the furnace is blowing air but still not heating properly, you will want to check the thermostat settings first. Make sure that the settings are set to AUTO and HEAT. When the thermostat is set to ON, the fan will constantly blow air, but not the air may not be warm.
  • Set temperature - Make sure the temperature on the thermostat is set to a recommended temperature. Generally, you want the temperature set around 72 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal performance.
  • Check the air filter - When the air filter is not regularly changed, there can be a build-up of dirt and debris. This can block the filter and not allow for air flow. Check that the air filter is not clogged and allows air flow.
  • Reset the furnace - Try resetting the unit to resolve the issue. Depending on your model number, the reset button could be located behind the front access panel. Remove that front panel and press the reset button. If resetting the furnace doesn’t work, you may need to contact a local authorized service agent to help troubleshoot a more complex issue.

Furnace Not Turning Off

  • Temperature too high - If your furnace is not turning off, you will need to check the thermostat temperature. The recommended average set temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit. If you set the temperature too high, then this could put excess pressure on your furnace and hurt its performance.
  • Faulty limit switch/thermostat - If the issue is not a draft or high temperature, the furnace could have a faulty limit switch or a malfunctioning thermostat. These are more complex issues that will require you to contact a local authorized service agent to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
  • Window or door drafts - The furnace will constantly run if you have any window or door drafts that are letting out all that warm air. Check all doors and windows for any drafts and work on sealing any you find. Fixing drafts can help your furnace’s performance and lower the utility bill.

Please contact a local authorized service agent who can help with this specific unit and all your heating and cooling needs.
