But if something seems amiss and you’re not feeling as cozy as you should, there may be an issue plaguing your unit. If you’re experiencing any of the following problems with your Goodman heat pump, troubleshoot them quickly with our easy-to-follow guide. 

Problem: Heat Pump Isn’t Heating/Cooling

Causes

  • Dirty air filter
  • Incorrect thermostat setting
  • Issue with thermostat
  • Unopened or blocked vents/registers
  • Blockage around unit
  • Low refrigerant

Solutions

  • Change your air filter
  • Set your thermostat to the correct setting
  • Have your thermostat check and either repaired or replaced by an authorized HVAC technician
  • Check that vents and registers are open and aren’t blocked
  • Clear any blockage from around your unit
  • Contact an authorized HVAC technician to inspect refrigerant

Problem: Heat Pump is Freezing Up or Frozen

Causes

  • Dirty air filter
  • Blockage around unit
  • Faulty defrost timer
  • Low refrigerant
  • Dirty coils
  • Water or ice on unit

Solutions

  • Change your air filter
  • Clear any blockage from around your unit
  • Let your defrost timer cycle through automatically. If it doesn’t run, turn it on manually. If that doesn’t work, contact an authorized HVAC technician.
  • Contact an authorized HVAC technician to inspect refrigerant
  • Clean around the coils or have it professionally done by an authorized HVAC technician
  • Turn off power to the unit and pour hot water over any ice to melt it

Problem: Heat Pump Blower Motor Isn’t Running

Causes

  • Debris or blockage around the fan
  • Motor is broken or faulty

Solutions

  • Clear away any debris from around fan while the power is off
  • Have your blower motor repaired or replaced

Problem: Heat Pump is Displaying an Error Code

In some cases, your unit may display an error code. These error codes indicate what is causing the issue with your unit. Be sure to take note of the error code for reference, and let an HVAC technician know.

Problem: Heat Pump is Leaking Water

Causes

  • Refrigerant leaking
  • Damaged condensate pan
  • Clogged drain lines

Solutions

Contact an authorized HVAC technician to inspect, replace or repair any of these issues.

Problem: Heat Pump is Constantly Running

Causes

  • Thermostat settings are too high or too low
  • Dirty air filter
  • Faulty or broken compressor contactor

Solutions

  • Adjust your thermostat settings so they’re not too extreme
  • Change your air filter
  • Contact an authorized HVAC technician

Problem: Heat Pump is Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your heat pump unit runs an unusually short heating or cooling cycle. This means that your space cannot be properly heated or cooled.

Causes

  • Wrong size heat pump
  • Dirty air filter
  • Low refrigerant
  • Uncalibrated thermostat
  • Faulty thermostat

Solutions

  • Have your unit inspected by an authorized HVAC technician to determine if your heat pump is the correct size for your space.
  • Change your air filter
  • Contact an authorized HVAC technician to inspect refrigerant
  • Check your owner’s manual for thermostat calibration instructions. If none are present, contact an authorized HVAC technician.
