Hoshizaki manufactures some of the best ice machines in the world, including dispenser bins. These units not create plenty of refreshing ice for beverages, but they also save lots of space in your establishment. Keeping your ice clean and at its highest quality is essential. A dirty bin can distort the color of your cubes and create a bad taste or smell.

While there are plenty of general tips for cleaning your ice machine, it can be tricky to find specific steps for your exact machine. Luckily, we got you covered. Below are specific instructions for Hoshizaki ice bin cleaning and maintenance, which are common for B-250PF, B-300PF, B-500PF, B-700PF, B-800PF, B-900PF, BD-300PF, BD-500PF, B-300SF, B-500SF, B-700SF, B-900SF, BD-300SF, and BD-500SF bin models.

What You Need:

Cleaning & Sanitizing the Ice Bin:

Hoshizaki recommends cleaning and sanitizing your bin at least once a year. However, you should consider doing it more frequently depending on the water quality in your area or if your unit is used often.

Note: make sure to wear gloves and goggles, and do not use ammonia cleaners.

Bin Cleaning Instructions

  • Step 1. Prepare the machine – Turn off the icemaker and remove any remaining ice from the bin and dispenser. If there is still ice in the bin or dispenser, it will be contaminated during the cleaning and sanitizing process.
  • Step 2. Create open access to the bin interior – Remove the thumbscrews and baffle from the bin. Then, mix 5.3 fl oz of ScaleAway per 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket and let the baffle and thumbscrews soak for 15 minutes.
  • Step 3. Dilute the Hoshizaki ScaleAway cleaner – Dilute 5 fl oz of ScaleAway per 1 gallon of warm water in a spray bottle. Use immediately for optimal effectiveness.
  • Step 4. Clean the ice bin interior – Spray the interior with the ScaleAway solution and scrub with a tool suitable to bin size (ex: sponge, scrub brush, nylon brush on pole). Be sure to wipe the bin opening and bin lid. When finished, rinse the bin thoroughly with water.

Bin Sanitizing Instructions

  • Step 5. Create a sanitizing solution – Dilute 0.5 fl oz of bleach per 1 gallon of warm water in a spray bottle. Use immediately for optimal effectiveness.
  • Step 6. Sanitize the ice bin interior – Spray the interior with the sanitizing solution and scrub with a tool suitable to bin size (ex: sponge, scrub brush, nylon brush on pole). Be sure to wipe the bin opening and bin lid. When finished, rinse the bin thoroughly with water. Wipe the bin to remove any remaining bleach.

Baffle and Thumbscrew Cleaning/Sanitizing Instructions

  • Step 7. Clean the baffle and thumbscrews – Scrub the baffle and thumbscrews vigorously to remove any remaining scale buildup. When finished, rinse the baffle and thumbscrews.
  • Step 8. Sanitize the baffle and thumbscrews – Spray and scrub the baffle and thumbscrews with bleach mixture. When finished, rinse the baffle and thumbscrews.
  • Step 9. Reattach baffle and thumbscrews – Once everything has dried off, reattach each part and component to the machine. Make sure they’re positioned properly and secure.
  • Step 10. Prepare bin to hold ice – Ensure that the bin has completely drained and has been thoroughly rinsed. Then, turn the icemaker back on.
  • Step 11. Clean the exterior – If you have an SF model, clean the exterior with stainless steel polish and a clean cloth.
