How to Clean an AC Evaporator Coil

- Step 1. Turn the unit off and wait for it to cool down before continuing.
- Step 2. Remove the access panel to the coils.
- Step 3. For coils that have dirt or lint build-up, vacuum them with a brush attachment. For coils that have oil or grease build-up, clean them with a mild detergent mixed with water solution, then rinse. Be sure not to splash any water on any insulation or flood the unit.
- Step 4. Check any drain pan or condensate pan that your system might have and remove any debris gathered.
- Step 5. Flush the pan and drain line with clean water to remove any excess dirt or build-up.
- Step 6. Replace the access panel over the coils again.
- Step 7. Turn the unit back on.
