How to Replace a Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter

How to Replace a Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter

If you own a Whirlpool refrigerator it's important to replace the water filter to ensure clean and fresh water. In this guide below, we’ll go over the steps on how to replace a Whirlpool refrigerator water filter, plus another section on changing the air filter as well.

How Often to Replace Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter?

You should be changing the water filter every 6 months to keep your fridge water clean and free from odors and unpleasant tastes. For those with refrigerators that have an indicator light, you can check them periodically to see when it is time to change the filter.

Changing the Water Filter

  • Step 1. Locate the filter - Start by finding where the water filter is located on your fridge model. Most Whirlpool refrigerators will have the filter in the upper right-hand corner inside the fridge.
  • Step 2. Open the filter cover - For water filters with a door or cover, open the cover/door to get to the water filter.
  • Step 3. Remove the filter - Remove the old filter and discard it.
  • Step 4. Open the new filter - Remove the new filter from the packaging and remove any protective covering from the o-rings.
  • Step 5. Insert the new filter - Insert the new filter, making sure that any arrows or notches are aligned. Some filters might rotate until they’re locked in place.
  • Step 6. Close the filter cover -  Once the filter is locked into place, close the filter cover or door.
  • Step 7. Flush the new filter - After the new filter is in place, run 4 gallons of water through the line. This will help flush the new filter.
