How to Use a Bakers Pride Charbroiler

When using a Bakers Pride charbroiler, mastering a few key techniques will help you get the most out of this high-performance piece of equipment. Whether you're grilling steaks, burgers, or vegetables, understanding how to properly operate the charbroiler will ensure optimal results. This guide will walk you through essential steps, like preheating and lighting the grill, to make sure you're using your Bakers Pride charbroiler like a pro.

The following guide will go over operating for CBBQ, BPHCB, BPHCRB, XXE, CH, F, C, L Series Charbroilers.

BPHCB & BPHCRB Series

Pilot Operation Flame Failure Gas Valve Lighting

  • Step 1. Turn main valve - Turn the knob on the main gas valve to the pilot position.
  • Step 2. Start gas flow - Depress the knob to start gas flow to the pilot valve.
  • Step 3. Light pilot valve - Using a match or taper lighter, light the pilot valve.
  • Step 4. Heat up thermocouple - Hold in the knob for 15 to 30 seconds to heat up the thermocouple.
  • Step 5. Release knob - Release the knob and then turn it to the desired gas flow. 

Standing Pilot Lighting

  • Step 1. Turn shut off valve off - Turn off the manual shut off valve and wait 5 minutes to clear the gas. 
  • Step 2. Turn off all knobs - Turn all knobs to the “OFF” position. 
  • Step 3. Turn on shut off valve - Turn on the manual shut off valve. 
  • Step 4. Ignite pilot tube - Use a match or taper lighter to both openings on the pilot tube. 
  • Step 5. Check burners - Turn the burner knobs to “HI” to make sure they are lighting properly. If the burner does not ignite, promptly open the pilot valve more. If the pilot flame appears larger than necessary, turn it down and reset burner ignition.

Preheating

  • Step 1. Preheat unit - Turn the burners on 15-20 minutes before cooking to preheat.
  • Step 2. Set temperature - Set the knobs to the desired temperature or flame height.
  • Step 3. Maintain water/grease pan - Make sure to keep the grease/water pan filled with a layer of water.

XXE Series

Lighting the Grill

  • Step 1. Turn valves off - Turn all the broiler valves to the “OFF” position.
  • Step 2. Open main valve - Open the main gas shut off valve.
  • Step 3. Turn to ignite position - Press, turn counterclockwise and hold the burner control knob to the pilot burner ignition position.
  • Step 4. Light pilot burner - Using a long taper lighter or match, light the pilot burner. 
  • Step 5. Release burner knob - Release the knob after 30 seconds. The pilot burner should stay lit. If the pilot burner doesn’t stay lit, wait 5 minutes, then repeat steps 3-4. 
  • Step 6. Adjust pilot flame - Use a screwdriver to adjust the pilot burner flame to 1/2”.  Turn the adjusting screw clockwise to reduce or counterclockwise to increase the pilot burner flame.
  • Step 7. Adjust burner flames - Using the individual knobs, adjust each burner to the desired flame size. 
  • Step 8. Preheat unit - Before broiling any food product, allow the unit to preheat for 20-25 minutes. 

CH Series

  • Step 1. Turn off broiler valves - Turn all the broiler valves to the “OFF” position.
  • Step 2. Remove grates & radiants - Remove each top grate and radiant.
  • Step 3. Open main shut off valve - Open the main gas shut-off valve. Wait for the gas to move from the gas line to the pilot burners.
  • Step 4. Light pilot burners - Light the pilot burners using a long taper.
  • Step 5. Turn burner control valves on - Turn the burner control valves on to light the burners. If any burner fails to light, turn the burner valves to “OFF”, wait five minutes and repeat the above procedure.
  • Step 6. Turn burner valves off - After all the burners have been lit, turn every burner valve off and wait for the unit to cool down. Make sure the pilot burner stays lit. 
  • Step 7. Replace grates & radiants - Replace the top grates and radiants.
  • Step 8. Preheat unit - Before broiling any food product, turn the burners on and allow the unit to preheat for 45-60 minutes. 

GLO-STONES/RADIANT C, F, L

When using these charbroilers, always make sure to always cook in a tilted position. 

  • Step 1. Turn burners off - Turn all the burners to the “OFF” position. 
  • Step 2. Remove grids & radiants - Remove the top grids and last radiants.
  • Step 3. Turn runner valve on - Turn the runner tube valve on.
  • Step 4. Light runner tube - Light the runner tube. If it doesn’t light right away, wait a few seconds and then try again.
  • Step 5. Reinstall grids & radiants - Replace the radiants and top grids. Push and turn the burner valves to operate the individual burners as needed. 

CBBQ-30S & CBBQ-60S

  • Step 1. Check mounting brackets - Check that the tank mounting brackets are secured to the unit. 
  • Step 2. Turn all knobs off - Turn all the burner knobs and carryover tube knobs to the “OFF” position and slowly open the gas tank valves.
  • Step 3. Turn carryover tube on - Turn the carryover tube knob counter-clockwise to the “ON” position. 
  • Step 4. Light crossover tube - Insert a long match or lighter flame through the hole on the same side in the front panel to light the unit. Check that the entire crossover tube is lit by looking through the lighter holes on the front panel. If the tube isn’t lit, shut off the gas supply and do not use the unit. Wait 5 minutes before relighting. 
  • Step 5. Open burner valves - Open the desired burner valve and make sure the burners light completely from the crossover tube.
  • Step 6. Check pans - Make sure water pans are filled to within ½" of top edges.
