HVAC Efficiency Standards
Where you live has an impact on which HVAC products you can buy. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) placed energy efficiency standards on all HVAC equipment. Learn more below about the minimum standards in place as well as how they help save money every day.
HVAC Efficiency Test Breakdown
What is a SEER rating and how are HVAC systems tested for efficiency? A Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, rating measures the efficiency of an AC unit. Take a closer look at this test breakdown to get a better understanding of how companies can get an efficiency reading on equipment:
- Divide the cooling output of an AC by the energy input during a cooling season.
The higher the number, the more efficient the unit. Generally, these units are tested in a lab that simulates indoor and outdoor conditions so your unit may actually consume more electricity in the home versus in the lab it was tested in.
Minimum Efficiency Standards by Region
Each of the minimums may differ depending on the product type and even system-rated capacities. Here’s an overview of the previous and new efficiency standards by region:

HVAC Efficiency Improvement Tips
There are a few ways to increase the efficiency of your HVAC. In addition to clearing the vents and regularly cleaning your unit, you’ll want to make sure you pay attention to the following:
- Maximize Ventilation - Reduce the amount of hot air flowing by ensuring proper attic ventilation.
- Regularly Change Filters - Inspect your air filters once a month and change them at least every three months to ensure clean air and an efficient HVAC system.
- Check for Leaks - Inspect your unit to catch and seal any leaks.
- Schedule Regular Maintenance - HVAC systems need regular maintenance to run properly so be sure that you have a professional take a look at your system every now and again to keep it running like new.
