An InSinkErator is a mainstay of any kitchen—both residential and commercial. These garbage disposal units are tough on food waste and debris, helping to keep your sink mess-free. As with any kitchen equipment, cleaning your InSinkErator disposer is an essential preventative maintenance task. Thankfully, the process is ultra-simple. Learn how to clean and unclog your InSinkErator garbage disposal unit with our guide below.

This cleaning guide is applicable for Evolution Series and Badger Series garbage disposal units.

Unclogging

How to Clean an InSinkErator Garbage Disposal.

  • Step 1—Place a stopper in the sink opening, then fill the sink with warm water.
  • Step 2—Measure out ¼ cup of baking soda and dump into the water-filled sink.
  • Step 3—Turn on the disposer and remove the stopper from the sink drain at the same time. This will wash away any loose particles.
  • Step 4—If your disposer model has a sink baffle (i.e. Evolution series models), this can be removed and cleaned by hand. Do not operate the disposer without the baffle in place.

How to Unclog an InSinkErator Garbage Disposal

Sometimes cleaning and unclogging go hand-in-hand, and if you need to unclog your InSinkErator garbage disposal prior to cleaning, here’s how you do it:

  • Step 1—Grab a drain plunger. If you’re working with a double sink, block off the other sinkhole opening with a stopper.
  • Step 2—Fill up the sink with 4” / 10cm of water. Next, place the plunger over the opening to the garbage disposal; press the plunger down slowly and gently to create a seal over the disposal. Once the plunger is in place, pull it upwards quickly. Repeat this motion until the clog has dislodged.
  • Step 3—After unclogging, run cool water and the disposal unit for a minute or two.
