From small undercounter units to large reach-in models, Maxx Cold manufactures a wide variety of commercial refrigerators and freezers for the foodservice industry. In the rare instance a unit breaks down, it can affect a commercial kitchen’s bottom line. Fortunately, the Maxx Cold refrigerator troubleshooting tips and alarm codes below can help you diagnose the root cause of the problem quickly.

Troubleshooting Tips

Below are potential issues, causes and resolutions to look for.

Door Not Shutting

If the door to the unit won’t close, look for the following:

  • Dirty condenser coil – A large accumulation of dust and debris on the condenser coil can overheat the unit and wear down other components. Try to clean the condenser coil at least every three months.
  • Frozen evaporator coils – When there is a buildup of ice near the evaporator coils, this can cause a rise in temperature. The drain will need to be cleared or the evaporator will need to be repaired or replaced by an authorized technician.
  • Open door – An open door lets cool air escape the unit. If it’s not sealing shut, check for a broken gasket or loose hinges.

Unit Not Cooling

If the internal cabinet of the refrigerator or freezer is too warm and not cooling properly, check for the issues below:

  • Dirty condenser coil – A large accumulation of dust and debris on the condenser coil can overheat the unit and wear down other components. Try to clean the condenser coil at least every three months.
  • Frozen evaporator coils – When there is a buildup of ice near the evaporator coils, this can cause a rise in temperature. The drain will need to be cleared or the evaporator will need to be repaired or replaced by an authorized technician.
  • Open door – An open door lets cool air escape the unit. If it’s not sealing shut, check for a broken gasket or loose hinges.

Unit Making Noises

If the internal cabinet of the refrigerator or freezer is too warm and not cooling properly, check for the issues below:

  • Clicking sound when compressor starts – Whenever there is a loud clicking sound when the compressor kicks on, the compressor could be breaking down. Contact an authorized technician to repair or replace the part.
  • Scraping sound when door is open – If there is a loud scraping sound when the door is open, the evaporator fan could have a broken blade or a loose component could be rubbing up against the blades. Have either issue remedied by a technician.
  • Loud sounds when operating – If you hear a very loud sound when the door is open or closed, the evaporator fan could have a broken motor. It will need to be repaired by an authorized technician.
