Your Montague fryer helps you churn out delicious, perfectly fried foods on a daily basis. If your unit isn’t performing like it should, or it’s acting up, finding a possible cause and solution is essential. Below, we have compiled a troubleshooting guide for your Montague fryer so you can get your unit back up and running in no time.

This guide is applicable for Legend series gas fryer models RF40RF240 and RD18.

Fryer Isn’t Heating Up

  • Pilot isn’t lit—Light the pilot
  • Broken or faulty gas valve—Have gas valve replaced
  • Thermostat wires are damaged—Have wires replaced
  • Thermostat is set too low—Increase the thermostat setting
  • Thermostat’s out of calibration—Have thermostat recalibrated
  • Thermostat is broken or faulty—Have thermostat replaced

Thermostat Won’t Stay at Setpoint 

  • Thermostat’s out of calibration—Have thermostat recalibrated
  • Thermostat contacts are contaminated—Have thermostat replaced

Pilot Has Gone Out

  • Automatic gas valve is turned off—Turn on the gas valve and light pilot
  • Low pilot flame—Adjust the pilot flame to 1-½” (38mm)
  • Pilot orifice is clogged—Have pilot orifice cleaned
  • Pilot burner is clogged—Have pilot burner cleaned
  • Excessive draft in kitchen is causing the pilot flame to blow away from pilot generator—Find and eliminate draft
  • Pilot generator isn’t inserted fully into pilot burner—Have pilot generator reinstalled into pilot burner
  • Pilot generator’s output is low—Have pilot generator replaced
  • Resistance is too high in hi-limit thermostat contacts—Have hi-limit thermostat replaced
  • Pilot magnet in gas valve is defective—Have gas valve replaced
  • Connection is corroded where the pilot generator attaches to gas valve—Have pilot generator cleaned

Main Burner Won’t Turn On, but Pilot is Lit

  • Terminals on gas valve are dirty, loose or corroded—Have terminals cleaned and tightened
  • Terminals on thermostat are dirty, loose or corroded—Have terminals cleaned and tightened
  • Contacts on thermostat are experiencing high resistance—Have thermostat replaced
  • Thermostat’s out of calibration—Have thermostat calibrated
  • Defective automatic gas valve—Have automatic gas valve replaced
  • Automatic gas valve knob is in the pilot position—Turn the gas valve knob to “ON”

Main Burner Doesn’t Light All the Way

  • Broken burner flame deflector—Replace burner flame deflector
  • Gas pressure at burner is too high or too low—Have gas pressure adjusted
  • Clogged main burner orifice(s)—Clean the orifice(s)
  • Fryer flue is connected directly to the vent hood with a chimney-like duct—Have the duct removed and replaced to allow for proper space and airflow between the flue outlet and vent hood filters
  • Flue is blocked—Clear blockage from flue

Delayed Ignition of Main Burner

  • Broken burner flame deflector(s)—Replace burner flame deflector(s)
  • Low pilot flame—Adjust the pilot flame to 1-½” (38mm)
  • Pilot flame is too far away from first orifice on burner—Have pilot hood repositioned toward the first burner orifice
  • Incoming gas pressure is too low—Contact your local gas company to have gas pressure increased
  • Incoming gas line is too small—Have gas line replaced with proper size
  • Clogged burner orifice(s)—Clean the orifice(s)

Flame is Rolling Out Under Fryer

  • Flue is blocked—Clear blockage from flue
  • Not enough make-up air in kitchen—Increase make-up air

Pilot Light Stays Lit When Gas Valve is Pushed In, But Goes Out When It’s Released

  • Flue is blocked—Clear blockage from flue
  • Low millivolt output on pilot generator—Have pilot generator inspected
  • Hi-limit thermostat is stuck open—Have hi-limit thermostat replaced
  • Dirty, loose or corroded hi-limit wires—Clean and tighten hi-limit wires on gas valve
