Rheem Gas Furnace Troubleshooting

As the weather gets colder, it is important to check up on your furnace and have it heating spaces properly. When the furnace malfunctions, it can be frustrating and confusing to understand what is happening. We have a quick and easy guide on Rheem gas furnace troubleshooting tips to help you with your furnace.

If you want to get ahead of furnace problems and keep yours maintained, check off tasks on our HVAC maintenance checklist.

Lack of Airflow

  • Check furnace filter - Check that the furnace filter is clean and not blocked by debris. The filter needs to be changed on a regular basis so the furnace can keep working.
  • Check vents for blockage - The vents should also be checked for any dust and debris build-up. Keeping these clean and clear of build-up helps to keep airflow working. Also make sure to check the area around the vents to make sure no object or equipment is blocking the vent.

Furnace Not Turning On

  • Check furnace switch - Make sure that the furnace switch isn’t off.
  • Flip circuit breaker - Look at the circuit breaker and make sure that a fuse wasn’t blown. Also make sure that power is turned on at the breaker box.

Furnace Flame

  • Low furnace flame - Look at the furnace flame and make sure it is the right color and burning consistently. If it looks low or is not blue, contact a local authorized service agent to assist.
  • Pilot light is out - The pilot light on the furnace should always be lit. If this light is out the furnace will not turn on. Check your specific model’s manual to follow guidelines on relighting the pilot light. If there is an excessive gas smell, this could indicate a gas leak with the furnace. If you suspect a gas leak, don’t attempt to relight the pilot light. Exit the building and call the gas company immediately.

Code Error

If the furnace isn’t working correctly, check the furnace’s control panel for an error code. A specific error code will display on the screen for whatever problem the furnace has. Contact a local authorized service agent to help resolve any issue and provide in-depth information.
