HVAC Technician Working - York Heat Pump Troubleshooting

Heat pumps are an incredibly versatile piece of HVAC equipment. They typically can work wonders with keeping your space warm or cool. However, in the occasional instance your York heat pump is having issues you need the right tips to resolve it. Thankfully this guide is here to walk you through ways to troubleshoot your HVAC equipment when it’s not working right.

York Heat Pump Not Turning On

Whether you’re trying to start your heat pump to cool or heat up the place, it can be very frustrating to discover it’s not turning on. The following could be reasons this is occurring:

  • Thermostat issues - Your unit could be prevented from turning on due to issues with the thermostat. There’s two different things that could be wrong. Either the thermostat is miscalibrated or it isn’t on the right setting.
  • Tripped circuit breaker - It’s possible the circuit breaker has been tripped and needs a restart so power is going to the unit.
  • Power supply issue - The unit won't turn on without power. So if your power supply for the heat pump is having issues it will prevent it from turning on. It could be a damaged power cord, the cord isn’t plugged in or there is insufficient voltage.

York Heat Pump Not Cooling

When it begins to get hot outside, you need your heat pump to start cooling things down. Here’s some reasons it might not be cooling properly:

  • Dirty air filter - It’s possible the air filter is dirty and prevents cool air from flowing. Be sure to clean or change the filter as needed.
  • Door or window is open - If a door or window has been left open then the cool air will probably blow outside. Close your windows and the door so the cool air stays inside your space.
  • Air intake is obstructed - Obstructions will also prevent cool air from flowing to cool down your space. Be sure to clear debris from air intake.
  • Refrigerant leak - You could be looking at a refrigerant leak that’s stopping your heat pump from cooling.
  • Temperature incorrectly set - Check your thermostat and be sure you have the correct temperature setting enabled.
  • Temperature sensor issue - The temperature sensor could be having an issue and thus not initiating cooling from the heat pump.

York Heat Pump Not Heating

Instead of throwing on jackets while inside, you can try to get your heat pump heating again with these troubleshooting tips:

  • Dirty air filter - Preventative maintenance is very important to keep HVAC equipment running. So if you have a dirty air filter be sure to clean or replace it to get the unit heating again.
  • Door or window is open - If you have windows left open all the hot air the heat pump produces will escape. Be sure to securely close them.
  • Air intake is obstructed - If debris builds up in the air intake it’ll stop your unit from heating up the space. Be sure to clear that up so it can run properly.
  • Refrigerant leak - Refrigerant leaks can keep your heat pump from heating properly.
  • Temperature incorrectly set - It’s possible the temperature wasn’t set correctly on the thermostat. Be sure to check that and adjust the temperature to heat accordingly.
  • Snow accumulation - If the heat pump is an outside unit then it could have snow accumulating on top of it. Be sure to brush off the loose snow so it can heat properly.
