Central Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

Notice your home is too warm? Have you set that thermostat to max cooling and yet still haven’t noticed your house feeling colder? There could be something wrong causing the issue. Before you make that service call, these quick central air conditioner troubleshooting tips might be able to help. 

Not Cooling or Working

  • Circuit breaker is off or tripped - Turn on or reset the breaker.
  • Thermostat is set to HEAT or OFF - Adjust the setting to COOL.
  • Temperature at the thermostat is set too high - Lower the temperature setting.
  • Air registers are closed or blocked - Open the registers and move away any furniture or rugs that were covering it. 
  • Ductwork is dirty or clogged - Contact an authorized service technician. 
  • Window or door is left open - Ensure all doors and windows have been closed to prevent cool air from escaping.
  • Unit is off - Be sure the power box near the unit is connected. 
  • Dirty condenser - Clean the condenser and unit of debris and dust so it efficiently runs. 
  • Dirty or damaged filter - Clean or replace the filter
