How to Clean a Follett Countertop Ice Machine
If you notice the LED light display is signaling PM, it might be time to clean up the ice maker. It’s important to perform such maintenance in order to ensure ice being served to customers is safe to consume. Otherwise, it poses the risk of someone getting sick and the downfall of your business. Worry not, though. Whether it’s the first time the display has flashed or you’re new to the job, Parts Town can help you out. The following steps will show you how to clean a Follett countertop ice machine.
This guide specifically covers the procedure for the 7 series and 15 series models.

Cleaning a Follett Countertop Ice Machine Interior & Exterior
It is recommended to clean these units every 6 months or more frequently if the local water conditions require it.
Cleaning the Interior
- Step 1. Empty the unit - Hold a bucket under the ice chute. Then, empty the unit by dispensing all of the ice.
- Step 2. Activate maintenance mode - Press and hold the maintenance/clean switch until the wrench appears on the LED light display to activate maintenance mode.
- Step 3. Remove components - Remove the chrome ice chute and the drip tray.
- Note. Some drip trays will be connected to a drain hose that you will need to be cautious of.
- Step 4. Remove the screws - Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws that were located behind the drip tray.
- Step 5. Remove the front panel - Carefully remove the front panel from the unit and disconnect wires from the panel.
- Note. Take a picture of the connections before you disconnect. You can refer to it when reconnecting the wires.
- Step 6. Drain the drain tube - Remove the plug cap covering the drain tube and lower the open end into a bucket to drain.
- Step 7. Reinstall the drain tube - Once draining is completed, place the plug cap back onto the end of the drain tube and then secure the tube back into the holder.
- Step 8. Remove top panel - Slightly slide the top panel back and lift it up to remove.
- Step 9. Remove bin components - Remove the bin cover and the top cap.
- Step 10. Cover the discharge chute - Use the top cap that was removed from the bin to cover the discharge chute by screwing it into place.
- Step 11. Mix cleaner - In a bucket, mix the Follett SafeCLEAN Plus with water. Follow the bottle label for proper ratios.
- Note. Always wear gloves while handling the Follett SafeCLEAN Plus.
- Step 12. Add solution to the bin - Place a funnel into the bin lid access hole to pour the Follett SafeCLEAN Plus solution into the bin. Pour in enough to reach the spout neck and let it sit for 15 minutes.
- Step 13. Soak the ice dispense chute - While letting the solution in the bin sit, soak the ice dispense chute in Follett SafeCLEAN Plus solution for 2 minutes.
- Step 14. Rinse the chute - Rinse the ice dispense chute at a sink with clean water.
- Step 15. Drain the system - Remove the plug cap from the drain tube and lower the open end into a bucket to drain the bin of the cleaning solution.
- Step 16. Reinstall the drain tube - Once draining is completed, place the plug cap back onto the end of the drain tube and then secure the tube back into the holder.
- Step 17. Rinse the unit - Fill and drain the unit with clean water twice to ensure all cleaner is flushed out of the system.
- Note. Use a clean funnel to pour water into the bin lid access hole.
- Step 18. Reinstall the cap - Remove the cap from the discharge chute and reinstall it onto the bin lid spout.
- Note. Keep a bucket under the discharge chute when removing the cap in case water spills out.
- Step 19. Reinstall the cover - Place the cover back on top of the bin.
- Step 20. Reinstall components - Reinstall the top panel and then the front panel. Make sure to reconnect all wires to the front panel. Then, reinstall the two screws behind the drip trayand ice dispenser chute.
- Step 21. Disable maintenance mode - Press and hold the maintenance/clean switch until the wrench disappears from the LED screen to disable maintenance mode.
Cleaning the Exterior
- Step 22. Activate cleaning mode - Press and immediately release the maintenance/clean switch to activate cleaning mode.
- Step 23. Clean exterior plastic components - Use a soft cloth and non-abrasive glass cleaner to wash the external plastic components of the unit.
- Step 24. Clean exterior stainless steel components - Use a soft cloth and stainless steel cleaner to wash the external stainless steel components of the unit.
- Step 25. Disable cleaning mode - Press and immediately release the maintenance/clean switch to put the unit back into normal operation.
