Ice-O-Matic GEM or MFI Ice Machine Troubleshooting
While it may seem like it’s just ice, it can actually be essential for your commercial kitchen, hotel or hospital in order to keep customers and guests happy. Nobody looks forward to sipping on a lukewarm glass of water, juice or soda. So if the unit has a lack of power or just isn’t dropping ice, Parts Town is here to help. The following fixes apply to Ice-O-Matic GEM and MFI series ice machines.
No Ice
If the unit is on or off and isn’t making ice, the fix could be easier than you realize.
- Unit is turned off - Turn on the unit.
- Unit is unplugged - Plug in the unit.
- Low water level - Check the water line is open and the filter is clean.
- Blocked ice level sensors - Clean the sensor and clear away any blockages.
- High pressure control is open - Contact an authorized service technician.
- Water level sensors have scale build up - Clean the sensor.
- Auger motor humming but not turning - Contact an authorized service technician.
- Low pressure control is open - Contact an authorized service technician.
- Circuit breaker is off or tripped - Turn on or reset the circuit breaker.
- Compressor issue - Contact an authorized service technician.
Makes Ice Slowly
If you notice the machine isn’t making ice fast enough to keep up with customer demand, try the following solutions:
- Condenser is dirty - Clean the condenser.
- Auger and evaporator have mineral scale - Descale the unit.
- Low suction pressure - Contact an authorized service technician.
Leaks Water
When the ice machine is causing puddles on the floor, something could be causing it to leak.
- There is a blockage in the drain - Either clear out the clog from the drain tube or clean the machine to clear any scale build up.
- Tubing is cracked - Check for damages and contact an authorized service technician.
- Water hose is disconnected - While the water is turned off, reconnect the hose.
- The reservoir cover is missing - Reinstall the cover.
- Reservoir cover is cracked - Replace the cover.
- Evaporator water seal is leaking - Contact an authorized service technician.
Machine is Noisy
While some noises might be normal, if the unit is excessively being loud, there could be an issue present.
- Evaporator coated in mineral buildup - Clean the unit.
- Dry motor bearing - Contact an authorized service technician.
Excessive Water Use
If the unit is using even more water than usual, try these Ice-O-Matic GEM or MFI ice machine troubleshooting tips:
- Water regulating valve isn’t adjusted properly - Contact an authorized service technician.

- Reservoir float valve leaks - Contact a technician to replace the valve or seat.
- Overcharged refrigerant - Contact an authorized service technician.

Excessive Ice Meltage
If there’s a puddle forming in the machine from excessive ice meltage, any one of the following causes could be the culprit:
- There is a blockage in the drain - Either clear out the clog from the drain tube or clean the machine to clear any scale build up.
- Improper drain installation - Contact an authorized service technician.
- Poor fit between door frame and bin door - Adjust or replace the door.
Error Lights
Error lights are meant to signal an issue is occurring with the machine. Rather than panicking as soon as you see one of these lights, pick up the phone and contact an authorized service technician. They will be able to diagnose and resolve the issue.
