Residential Furnace Filter Replacement & Maintenance
Good airflow is vital for HVAC equipment to adequately heat up your home. Thankfully, strong airflow can be guaranteed with a clean, undamaged filter in the unit. How do you achieve such a condition though? By performing consistent residential furnace filter replacement and maintenance. The following guide will help keep the filter clean and fresh and your home at the right temperature all winter long.
Cleaning & Replacing
Furnace filters need to be replaced at least every 3 months. Depending on the ones you buy, they will either be disposable or reusable ones you can clean. Always be sure to get filters that fit and are rated for your unit.
- Step 1. Access the filter - Locate the filter compartment door and open it. The location can vary between different manufacturers.
- Step 2. Remove the filter - The current filter can be pulled out gently to remove it. If you have a reusable filter, do not dispose of it after removal.
- Step 3. Inspect the filter - For reusable filters, check if it needs to be cleaned or fully replaced. To clean them, simply rinse them with water. For disposable ones, they can be discarded and a new one obtained.
- Step 4. Install the filter - Slide either the cleaned or new filter into the compartment. Verify it is facing the correct direction based on the arrow on the filter. The arrow should be pointing in the direction airflow moves through the unit.
- Step 5. Cover the compartment - Close the filter compartment door to complete the replacement process.
