What is an HVAC Contactor?
In an HVAC unit, the contactor acts like a bridge to connect the flow of electricity between your air conditioner’s components, keeping it running. This small component ensures that the electricity has a straightforward direction to go without other aspects of the unit getting in the way and potentially damaged.
How Does an HVAC Contactor Work?
When the AC unit is turned off, the contactors will be elevated, preventing electricity from flowing to critical components like the condenser, compressor and motors. They will only descend when the unit turns on, which enables the flow of electric currents. This mechanism can help conserve power and allow the unit to rest when not in use.
What are Signs of a Failing HVAC Contactor?
Some easily recognizable signs of a malfunctioning contactor often include physical signs such as melted casing or audible signs such as chattering or humming. Additionally, if the unit exhibits strange behavior including difficulty turning on or off, this shows an issue with the contactor. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important that you replace the HVAC contactor.
Can a Faulty Contactor Cause System Issues?
Yes. A defective or dysfunctional contractor in your AC unit can result in a plethora of problems. These can range from serious to minute and can include failure to turn on, ineffective cooling, persistent operation even when turned off and failure to turn off completely.
