How to Make a Kason Hinge Adjustment
Sagging or visible gaps, drastic temperature fluctuation, more ice or frost buildup than usual, and an increased effort to open and close the door are all signs that it may be time for a Kason hinge adjustment. It’s possible that the door hinge was installed improperly from the get-go or that frequent opening and closing have caused it to swing out of alignment over time.
In this guide, you can learn how to make a Kason hinge adjustment for models 1345 and 1346 and how to reverse a Kason hinge for models 1245 and 1248 in just a couple of steps and minutes.
How Do You Adjust a Kason Hinge?
Wondering how to adjust a Kason 1346 hinge or even a 1345 hinge? We’ll cover how to adjust adjustable door hinges in 6 easy-to-follow steps below:
- Step 1. Remove the cover – The first thing you’ll want to do is remove the door hinge cover. You can locate it by its distinctive barbed wire tread patterns on the black rubber piece. To remove it, press down on the outer edge, pulling up and out. Similarly, you can also leverage a flathead screwdriver under the outermost edge of the cover to pry it off if you’re having trouble with the original method.
- Step 2. Loosen the 4 mounting screws – There are 4 mounting screws normally hidden underneath the black cover. You’ll want to slightly loosen each of these screws, but do not completely unscrew them.
- Step 3. Open the door – Most importantly when making a Kason hinge adjustment, you’ll want to make sure the door is propped open so that the magnetic door gasket seal is broken.
- Step 4. Adjust the door hinge – To adjust a door sag, turn the adjustment screw on the top hinge clockwise for a right-hand door and counterclockwise for a left-hand door. Repeat this process to the exact increment on the bottom hinge, turning the adjustment screw in the opposite direction you did on the top hinge. It’s unlikely you’ll have to make little, if any, adjustments to the center hinge if present.
- Note: Only use a crescent wrench on the center screw.
- Step 5. Retighten the 4 mounting screws – Once you’re satisfied with your Kason door hinge adjustment, you can refasten the 4 mounting screws you loosened in step 2.
- Step 6. Replace the cover – Lastly, put the finishing touches on your hinge by reinstalling the cover you removed in step one, pressing from left to right on a left-hand door and right to left on a right-hand door until it's securely in place.
How Do You Reverse a Kason Hinge?
One of the most convenient things about a Kason hinge is they can be reversed to fit a left or right-hinged door, so you don’t need to worry about buying a new one if you’ve accidentally assembled it the wrong way or want to reinstall it on a different refrigerator or freezer.
These instructions apply to Kason 1245 reversible cam-rise hinge and the Kason 1248 spring-assisted hinge:
- Step 1. Unscrew the hinge – If your hinge is already fastened to your refrigerator or freezer door, you’ll need to loosen the screws before being able to reverse the hinge.
- Step 2. Lift the hinge – Lifting up, you can separate the leaf from the pin.
- Step 4. Remove the cap – There should be a small, white cap situated on top of the hinge leaf. Pop this out with either your fingernails or using a screwdriver.
- Step 3. Remove the pin – Remove the pin from the leaf and reinsert it into the hinge strap. If you can’t remove the pin by pulling on the protruding end, you can use a screwdriver to hammer it out.
- Step 5. Reverse the hinge – Turning the leaf upside down, reinstall it onto the hinge pin, taking care to recap it at the end.
