How to Sanitize a Laundry Machine
Laundry machines are a workhorse for clean clothes, but sometimes they can get dirty too. Keeping them clean and sanitary is essential so clothing or linens can stay fresh and clean. Below we will help you learn how to sanitize a laundry machine. Always make sure to check your manufacturer’s manual on recommendations for any cleaning or sanitizing procedures before starting.
Sanitizing a Washing Machine
One method to sanitize the laundry machine is to use bleach to disinfect:
- Step 1. Add bleach to machine - Use 1 cup of bleach and add it either directly into the drum of top-loading washers or to the dispenser in front-loading washers.
- Step 2. Run an empty cycle - Run an empty cycle of hot water through the machine. This will safely dilute the bleach and ensure that the drum and inside can get properly sanitized.
- Step 3. Open door to dry - make sure to open the washer door after the cycle is finished so the machine can dry properly and prevent water from staying in the machine.
Sanitizing a Drying Machine
Sanitizing a dryer helps to prevent build-up and can keep it running for longer.
- Step 1. Remove lint before sanitizing - Make sure to remove any lint from the lint screen and dispose of it.
- Step 2. Mix bleach and water - Make a mixture of ¼ cup of bleach and 1 quart of water. This solution will safely dilute the bleach so you can properly sanitize the machine.
- Step 3. Wipe the machine with the solution - Use the bleach solution and a soft cloth to wipe down the interior of the dryer. Make sure to wipe the drum, rubber seal, dryer door and any gaskets to ensure that everything is sanitized.
- Step 4. Rinse sanitized surfaces - Rinse all the surfaces with clean water and a clean cloth to remove any excess sanitizer.
- Step 5. Dry the machine - Use a dry cloth to wipe the surfaces and ensure that they are all dry.
Without Bleach
If you want to avoid using bleach in your laundry machine there are other alternatives that you can use. Using pine oil is a common remedy for sanitizing machines. There are also commercial disinfectants and sanitizers that can be used to sanitize a laundry machine. Always make sure you are checking the manufacturer recommended products and chemicals before doing any cleaning and sanitizing on your unit. This will help to ensure that you don’t void the warranty on the machine.
