Nespresso Vertuo Descaling Guide: How to Descale Your Machine

Commercial espresso machine next to bean grinders - nespresso vertuo descaling guide

If you notice your Nespresso Vertuo espresso machine is brewing slower than normal or is producing less coffee then it may be time for maintenance. Descaling your unit regularly removes mineral buildup from the internal water system which helps preserve coffee quality, performance and the life of your machine.

Supplies

  • Nespresso-approved descaling solution
  • Fresh water
  • A large container or bowl
  • Access to your machine's user manual for model-specific instructions

How Often Should You Descale a Nespresso Vertuo?

It’s recommended that you descale your Nespresso Vertuo every three months or after about 300 capsules are used, whichever comes first. Some models will display a descaling alert when the time comes.

You may need to descale more frequently if:

  • You use hard water
  • Brewing times have increased
  • Beverage volumes seem inconsistent
  • Coffee temperature has decreased
  • The machine displays a descaling notification

Signs Your Nespresso Vertuo Needs Descaling

Watch for these common indicators:

  • Slower brewing cycles
  • Reduced water flow
  • Lower beverage temperatures
  • Unusual machine noises
  • Flashing descaling lights
  • Changes in coffee taste or aroma

How Do I Descale a Nespresso Vertuo Machine?

Though the exact button sequence varies between the Vertuo Next, Pop, VertuoPlus and other models, the overall process is similar.

Step 1: Empty the Machine

  • Remove any used capsules
  • Empty the drip tray
  • Empty and rinse the capsule container
  • Remove any water from the reservoir

Step 2: Prepare the Descaling Solution

Fill the water tank with the recommended amount of water and Nespresso descaling solution according to the product instructions.

Step 3: Position a Collection Container

Place a container that can hold at least 1 liter underneath the coffee outlet to catch the solution during the descaling process.

Step 4: Activate Descaling Mode

Consult your Vertuo manual with specific instructions on how to use the descaling mode.

Step 5: Run the Descaling Cycle

Once the system begins, the machine will automatically circulate the descaling solution through the internal components. This process can take around 20 minutes, depending on the model.

Step 6: Rinse the Water Tank

When the descaling cycle is complete:

  • Empty the collection container
  • Rinse the water tank thoroughly
  • Refill the tank with fresh drinking water

Step 7: Run the Rinse Cycle

Begin the rinse cycle to flush out any remaining solution from the system. Once the process is done, the machine will automatically stop.

Step 8: Exit Descaling Mode

Most Vertuo machines will automatically exit descaling mode once the rinse cycle is done. If the alert remains active, consult the machine’s user manual.

Common Nespresso Vertuo Descaling Mistakes

To help ensure a successful descaling cycle:

  • Don't use vinegar in place of an approved descaling solution.
  • Don't interrupt the cycle once it begins.
  • Don't refill the water tank during the descaling process unless instructed.
  • Don't ignore descaling alerts for extended periods.

Nespresso Vertuo Maintenance Tips

In addition to the descaling process, regular cleaning can help maintain performance.

Best practices include:

  • Rinsing the water tank regularly
  • Emptying used capsules frequently
  • Cleaning the drip tray
  • Wiping down the brewing head
  • Running periodic cleaning cycles
  • Using filtered water when possible
