Disposer Isn’t Starting but Water is Flowing

Possible Cause: disposer unit is jammed

Solution 1: Turn off the disposer unit and press the reset button located on the bottom of the unit. If the unit was running, allow it to cool for 3-5 minutes before pressing the reset button.

Solution 2: Turn off power and complete procedure below

  • Step 1—Insert a dejamming prong through the cone or sink opening and place it over the center raised bars located on the top of the revolving rotor.
  • Step 2—Twist the dejamming prong back and forth. If the revolving rotor begins to turn freely again, the jam has been cleared.
  • Step 3—Using long tongs or pliers, remove any foreign material that may have caused the jam. Do not use your hand.
  • Step 4—Turn on the disposer and allow it to run, then turn it back off and allow it to cool for 3-5 minutes. Then press the reset button that’s located on the bottom of the disposer unit to reset the motor overload protector. Do not hit or strike the reset button with an object.
