Trane Furnace Filter Replacement

Replacing the filter on your Trane furnace is an important part of routine maintenance. If you want to not only improve your home’s air quality but also your unit’s performance, this Trane furnace filter replacement guide explains the step-by-step process clearly and concisely so you can keep your heating system in good working order.

Supplies

  • Filter (refer to your unit’s manual to determine the appropriate filter)
  • Cell Phone/Camera
  • Pen or Permanent Marker
  • Calendar (optional)

How Often Do You Replace a Trane Furnace Filter?

It’s recommended that you replace your furnace’s filter once every 3 months. However, if you own multiple pets, experience respiratory issues or notice an increase in dust in your home, you should change your filter once a month.

How to Change the Filter

  • Step 1. Turn off the thermostat - Move the thermostat switch to “off.”
  • Step 2. Shut down the furnace - Use the switch near the furnace to cut power to the unit.
  • Step 3. Locate the filter and open the compartment - Identify the filter compartment and remove the panel. If necessary, use your unit’s manual to determine the filter’s location.
  • Step 4. Take a photo of the old filter, noting the orientation - Use a cell phone or camera to take a photo of the installed filter, paying close attention to how it’s positioned in the unit. Be sure to note the direction in which the airflow arrows are pointing.
  • Step 5. Remove the old filter - Take out the old filter, taking care so as not to loosen the dust and debris. Once again, remember to note the filter’s orientation, especially the direction of the airflow arrows.
  • Step 6. Unpackage the new filter and record the date of installation - Remove the new filter from the package and write the date of installation in the space provided (writing down the date will make following routine maintenance guidelines easier).
  • Step 7. Install the new filter properly - Place the new filter in the compartment, making sure that the filter arrows are pointing in the right direction (towards the motor).
  • Step 8. Close the compartment - Once the filter is installed, close the compartment.
  • Step 9. Schedule the next filter replacement - Since changing out the filter on a regular basis is important, remember to set a date for the next filter replacement. Putting a reminder in your phone or making a note on a calendar are good ways to do this.
  • Step 10. Resume normal operation - Now that the installation process is complete, turn the unit and thermostat on so you can use the furnace normally.
