How to Set Up a Buffet Table
From table placement to beverage dispensers, we can help you figure out what you need for a successful buffet as well as how to set it up. Should you have an event coming up, you’ll want to create a beautiful display with delicious food and decor. Learn how to set up a buffet table in 4 simple steps!
Step 1: Equipment
Stock up on coffee and tea cups, chafing dish fuel and more so you’re prepared to keep everything warm and ready to serve. It’s always a good idea to have extra chafing dishes as well just in case you have to switch out a dish that’s been emptied out.
Step 2: Table Layout
Make a layout to show where the tables should be. Create a clear start point and end point to avoid traffic jams when guests are getting food. There are three main set ups that will help you keep the lines moving. These include:
- Full Circle - Using circular tables will allow guests to move around freely to get what they want. You’ll also find this provides more space which is perfect for cocktail hour
- Lining Up - Keeping the tables up against the wall creates a simple and straight line that’ll keep things more compact.
- Dual Side Serving - This type of setup allows for bigger groups of people to navigate a larger area with ease, having access to both sides of a buffet style layout.
Step 3: Food & Utensil Placement
It’s important to place your food setup carefully. You’ll want warm foods placed in chafing dishes to maintain the proper temperature as well as drinks on a beverage holder to keep it off of the table.
In terms of food and drink placement, it’s recommended you place the larger dishes after the sides. For drinks, place them on their own table further down the line with the napkins and silverware so that guests have a free hand to load up their plates. As they exit the line, they can grab a cup for a drink, a bundle of utensils and extra napkins.
Step 4: Labels & Decorations
Once everything is in place, or at least planned out, you can start to get the labels and decorations in order. This means placing the linens on the tables and getting ready to serve a delicious meal.
Labeling the Food
It’s easy to find printed food labels or stands to display in front of each dish or beverage server. While this can be aesthetically pleasing, it’s a pretty practical way to make sure guests know what’s what. This is also a great idea for guests with allergies or dietary restrictions.
Decorating
After everything is laid out from the linen to the food, you can fill in the gaps with candles, flowers or decorations that match the event theme. Do keep in mind if you choose candles you’ll want something unscented. Having a scent may overpower the smells of the food.
