Troubleshooting an Air Conditioner - Trane Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

When the summer heat kicks in, it’s vital to have a working air conditioner. If your Trane air conditioner is in need of some troubleshooting, this guide has tips to walk you through the possible issues you could be facing, their causes and solutions. These are great to go through before contacting an authorized technician for something more serious. 

You can use this guide for just about any Trane air conditioner. This includes units such as the 4TTs. 

Air Conditioner is Not Running or Blowing Cool Air

  • Outdoor cooling coil may be clogged or blocked - Clean up the debris in the outside cooling coil.
  • Indoor air handler coil may be clogged or blocked - Wipe away any buildup of dust on the coil or change the air filter.
  • Filters may be clogged or dirty - Clean or replace the filters.
  • Thermostat controls may be set incorrectly - Rest the thermostat.
  • Refrigerant may be low or leaking - Contact an authorized service technician. 

Air Conditioner isn’t Turning On

  • Thermostat is not turned on or has dead batteries - Turn on the thermostat or replace the batteries.
  • Circuit breaker is tripped - Reset the circuit breaker.
  • Condenser unit is unplugged - Plug it in.
  • Air filter is clogged or dirty - Clean or replace the air filter.
  • Drain line is clogged - Turn off the unit and unplug it. Then, pour a cup of boiling water down the drain pipe.
  • Motor failure - Contact an authorized service technician.

Air Conditioner is Running but Thermostat Temperature isn’t Lowering

  • Thermostat is set incorrectly - Rest the thermostat.
  • Air filter is dirty - Clean or replace the air filter.
  • Condenser unit is blocked - Contact an authorized service technician.
  • Unit is undersized - Have an HVAC professional assess your home to help find the correct size. 
  • Refrigerant might be leaking - Contact an authorized service technician.

Drain Pan is Overflowing

  • Pump may be damaged or blocked - Contact an authorized service technician. 

Burning or Musty Smell Coming from Air Conditioner

  • Electrical Issue - Contact an authorized service technician.
  • Bacterial Growth -  Contact an authorized service technician.
