Spring is a time of new beginnings. Meaning it’s the perfect time for a deep clean of one’s home. Spring cleaning is a great way to catch up on home preventative maintenance, clean up old messes and get rid of unneeded junk. Don't forget to check out our spring cleaning safety tips to protect yourself while tackling that checklist.

How to Prepare for Spring Cleaning

Preparing for spring cleaning can be really simple. It’s mostly all about gathering the right supplies and making your plan. It’s important to have a checklist for supplies and tasks so nothing gets missed and you don’t forget to shop for any supplies. Here’s some supplies you should get to prepare for spring cleaning.

  • Vacuum cleaner - Cleaning up debris, dust and carpets is going to require a vacuum to pick it all up. Be sure yours is operating and ready to go.
  • Gloves - Gloves are important to wear while cleaning with chemicals so be sure to stock up on some of those too.
  • Mop and accessories - Getting floors clean requires a mop and all the mop accessories that go with it at clean up time.
  • Broom and dustpan - Whether it’s in the house, garage or on the deck, a broom is a great way to sweep up dust and debris on any floor.
  • Dusters - Dust can build up anywhere and everywhere easily. Having a duster ready to go will help gather it up so you’re not stuck sniffling from allergies.
  • Bucket - A bucket is perfect for carrying around supplies in or pouring in soap or water for cleaning.
  • Paper towels and rags - Whether you want disposables to wipe up or something soft and reusable, you’ll want to be stocked up on either or paper towels and rags
  • Spray bottles - Some cleaning chemicals don’t come in spray bottlers or they need to be safely diluted into one. Stock up on spray bottles so you have enough for all cleaning solutions you need.
  • Scrubbers and sponges - You’ll want to make sure to get both brushes and sponges since some cleaning requires the softer touch of a sponge or the rough brush of a scrubber.
  • Window squeegee - It’s important to use the right cleaning tools on windows to avoid streaking so make sure you get a proper squeegee.
  • Sanitizing wipes - Cleaning also means sanitizing so get the right wipes to do so.
  • Cleaning chemicals - There’s a variety of different chemicals with different cleaning purposes. You’ll want to make sure you’re stocked up on things like dishwashing chemicals, floor care chemicals, disinfectants, outdoor cleaning chemicals, and other housekeeping chemicals

Make sure to take a trip to the store to gather needed cleaning supplies when preparing for spring cleaning. You’ll also want to schedule out when you’re going to do each task so everything moves smoothly.

Cleaning with Spray Bottle - Home Spring Cleaning Checklist

Home Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring cleaning is all about clearing out the dust from winter and cleaning any areas that aren’t frequently cleaned. Use our checklist to pick and choose what areas need some extra attention in your home.

Wash baseboards/window sills

Dust off your window sills and baseboards to start. Then using some warm water, dish soap and a clean rag you can wipe down all the window sills and baseboards to clear off dirt and grime build-up. If your window frame has a lot of crevices, you can use a sponge to help pick up dirt that has accumulated.

Clean off the doormat

Now that winter is over, it might be time to give your door mat a thorough cleaning. Rinse off all the salt, snow, dirt and leaves from the mat and wash it with some warm water and soap. If you clean it on a sunny day, you can lay out the mat to dry in the sun.

Dust and clean the blinds

For those with plastic blinds, spring is the perfect time to dust them off. You can take them down and give them a good rinse with soap and water to really clean off any dirt. Cleaning the blinds will help prevent dust from accumulating in the air.

Degrease kitchen area and cabinets

If there is space above your cabinets, grease can build up on the tops from cooking oil. Start by dusting off any of the surfaces to make the rest of the cleaning process easier. Use a degreaser to clean the front and tops of your kitchen cabinets close to the oven. You can also degrease the backsplash near your stove and on top of the fridge.

Clean behind the fridge/oven

Since this cleaning task includes heavy lifting, make sure you have an extra set of hands to help move appliances. Sweep behind your refrigerator and oven to pick up larger pieces of debris. Then you can mop behind the appliances to clear out any built-up grease and dirt.

Vacuum the fridge coils

Don’t put off vacuuming up the dirt from your refrigerator coils. Keeping these clear of dirt can really help maintain the appliance and extend the life of the machine. Be cautious while cleaning the coils and ensure that you do not apply too much pressure to them, so as not to bend any coil.

Clean the shower head

Depending on where you live, shower heads can really build-up calcium or mineral deposits if you have hard or soft water. If your shower head is removable, that will make it easier to clean it. Soak the shower head in white vinegar for an hour to loosen and remove any build-up. For shower heads that are not removable, you can use a rubber band to tie a plastic bag filled with vinegar around the shower head. Once finished soaking, run the shower for a couple minutes to clear out the excess vinegar.

Clean tile grout

Mopping is a frequent cleaning process, but it doesn’t always clear out the dirt from tile grout. One of the easiest ways to clean out the grout is by mixing hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap. Make a paste and spoon the paste onto the grout. Allow this mixture to sit for a couple minutes, then use a brush to scrub at the grout. Finish it off by wiping up the residue with a warm, wet cloth.

Dust all the air vents

Whether you use a vacuum with an attachment head or a microfiber dust cloth, dusting and wiping down the air vents/registers will help keep the air clean in your home.

Steam all fabric furniture

Use the spring time to deep clean your furniture. Spot clean or use a steamer to go over your couch cushions, pillows, any chairs with fabric and even your mattress. This will help sanitize your furniture and have it clean for the new year. Make sure to let the fabric air out for a while before using again.
