Of course, consistent cleaning helps your unit operate in peak condition, which means it can yield a top-notch brew. This guide shows you how to clean a Grindmaster coffee machine each day and throughout the week.
The following cleaning instructions are for popular Banquet Brew Systems, Shuttle® Brewers and Airpot/Shuttle Brewers like the PrecisionBrew series.
Cleaning Grindmaster Banquet Brew Systems
The American Metal Ware Volume Banquet Brew Systems by Grindmaster not only make large amounts of coffee, but they also hold coffee to maintain hot temperatures. Below are urn cleaning instructions and full machine procedures.
Daily Urn Cleaning Instructions
Always clean the urn after each use by rinsing it out. Add a small amount of hot water inside. Use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the interior. Rinse with hot water until the urn is clear. For end-of-day procedures, please do the following:
- Step 1. Flush out the liner – Push the "Start" button on the machine. After a minute, push the red "Stop" switch. Hot water will spray the liner.
- Step 2. Scrub and rinse the urn – Use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the urn. Then, rinse carefully with hot water.
- Step 3. Scrub center urn pipe – Remove the clean-out cap located at the end of the coffee faucet to access the pipe. Use your brush to scrub inside the pipe. Also, use the brush with a cleaner to scrub the gauge glass. Rinse the pipe and gauge with hot water.
- Step 4. Scrub the faucet – Use the brush to scrub the faucet. Rinse with hot water.
- At least once a week, clean the interior of the urn and pipe with an OEM-approved cleaner.
Semi-Weekly Machine Cleaning Instructions
Conduct a full cleaning of the brew system at least twice a week. Use an approved cleaner and not soap, scouring powders or abrasives. Follow the steps from Grindmaster below:
- Step 1. Check if the outer jacket is full – The outer jacket should be full of water before you start the cleaning procedure.
- Step 2. Fill the urn liner with water – Turn on the heat, fill the urn liner with about 3/4 of water and add an OEM-approved cleaning compound. Follow the directions on the label for proper mixing. Let it sit for about 30 minutes.
- Step 3. Clean the components – Use a long, thin brush and cleaning solution to clean the gauge glasses, faucet pipe and plugs. Remove the faucet valve and tubes. Thoroughly brush and rinse them.
- Step 4. Clean the urn – Scrub the inside of the urn with the brush and cleaning solution. Make sure to clean the cover and lug nut in the liner's base.
- Step 5. Rinse and scrub the urn – Rinse and scrub the inside of the urn as well as the interior components about three or four times. Scrub with a clean cloth. This process helps remove odors and remnants of cleaning solution.
- Step 6. Refill the urn – Add a gallon or more of fresh water to the urn, leaving the cover partially open until the next use. If you add cold water, make sure you let the urn cool to prevent the liner from cracking.
- Step 7. Clean the urn baskets – Immerse the urn in cleaner solution and scrub with a stiff-bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly and let them air dry.
- Step 8. Unclog the spray head – Check if there are any clogs in the sprayhead. If so, remove them and use a stiff wire to open the holes.
Cleaning Shuttle & Airpot/Shuttle Brewers
These Grindmaster brewing solutions are common in many QSR kitchens, restaurants and cafeterias. For optimal use, follow the daily and weekly instructions below.
Daily Brewer Cleaning Instructions
After each use, remember to discard coffee grounds from the brew basket and rinse it with warm water. Follow the same procedure with the shuttle or airpot containers. At the end of each day, make sure to do the following steps:
- Step 1. Remove components - Remove the brew baskets, shuttles, faucets and spray heads
- Step 2. Wash components - At a sink, wash the brew baskets, shuttles, faucets and spray heads with warm, soapy water
- Note. Air dry or dry with a cloth
- Step 3. Clean the exterior - Wipe down the exterior using a cloth and warm, soapy water
- Note. Make sure the machine is off before cleaning
- Step 4. Rinse and dry the exterior - Use a damp cloth to rinse off excess cleaner and then dry it with another clean cloth
- Step 5. Polish the exterior - Use a soft cloth and stainless steel cleaner to polish the exterior
- Step 6. Clean the screen - Use a dry, soft cloth to clean off any dust or debris from the touchscreen
- Step 7. Fill shuttles with water – If shuttles are going to be left on overnight, fill them with water to help avoid coffee oil burn-in
Weekly/Bi-Weekly Cleaning Instructions
Depending on how frequently the brewer is used, deeply clean the machine at least once or twice a week. Use the following steps when cleaning:
- Step 1. Add water to the shuttle – Fill the shuttle with about a gallon of hot water. The shuttle should be about two-thirds full.
- Step 2. Add urn cleaner into the shuttle liner – Pour OEM-approved urn cleaner into the liner, following the label on the cleaner. Too much will ruin the stainless steel.
- Step 3. Scrub the liner interior – Use a plastic-bristle brush to clean the interior of the liners.
- Step 4. Clean the gauge glass – Unfasten the knurled nut at the top of the gauge glass. Use a small bottle brush to clean the glass.
- Step 5. Remove content from the shuttle – Pour the remaining contents into the shuttle.
- Step 6. Clean the faucet assembly – Take off the handle of the shuttle by unfastening the plastic bonnet. Then, carefully wash the faucet seat cup using a soft cloth, warm water and mild soap. Wash the faucet shank using a bottle brush.
- Step 7. Clean the airpot pick-up tube assembly – Soak the assembly in hot water and mild soap. For better results, use OEM-approved urn cleaner instead of soap.
- Step 8. Clean the shuttle surfaces – Wipe the warmer and bottom of the shuttle's surfaces. This helps maintain proper heat transfer.
- Step 9. Polish the brewer's exterior – Use stainless steel cleaner to polish the exterior. Make sure to adjust the cleaner for brass, copper or vinyl if the machine has these alternative finishes.
