Whirlpool Washing Machine Troubleshooting

Guide
Interior of a washing machine with water splashing - Whirlpool washing machine troubleshooting

While not every washing machine is the same, sometimes they have similar issues. Whirlpool washing machines, top- or front-loading, have some common issues that can be troubleshooted with the same processes. Learn how to find and solve these issues in our helpful guide.

Common Washing Machine Troubleshooting Tips

Notice your top-load or front-load Whirlpool washing machine having problems? We can help you find the issue and resolve it. Here are some of the overall Whirlpool washing machine troubleshooting tips:

  • The washer is making loud noises - If you notice a loud thumping, it’s likely that the drum is unbalanced. This can be due to overloading the machine. A whining noise indicates an internal issue that will require a service tech to come check it out.
  • The washer won’t start - If the lights are on but you can’t start the machine, you’ll need to unplug the machine and then remove the control panel to check for any issues with the wiring. Double check with your top loader or front loader manual for more information.
  • There’s an LD error code - This means the washer will stop because the water is taking too long to drain out of the machine. Check the pump filter and clear it of any debris or clogs. You can also  turn off the water line and clean the drain line at the back of the unit.
  • The washer lid won’t lock - The cycle won’t begin unless the lid locks. Try unplugging the machine and resetting it to see if the issue is resolved. If not, see the instructions below to run a diagnostic test.
  • The washer smells like burning rubber or plastic - Immediately unplug the machine and open the outer housing to see if there’s any discoloration. The smell could be from a rubber drive belt malfunction. If the belt looks okay then the issue is likely an electrical problem with either the motor or control panel.
  • The washer leaves deposits on clothing - If this occurs regularly then it’s time to clean your washer. Especially with high-efficiency washers, there isn’t a lot of water to flush out any remaining detergent or dirt that clings to the interior of the washer.

How to Run a Diagnostic Test on a Whirlpool Washer

If you need to complete a diagnostic test on your Whirlpool top load or front-load washer, follow these steps:

  • Step 1. Plug the machine in with only “Done” or “Clothes Clean” indicators on to engage standby mode.
  • Step 2. Select any button except STOP, START or POWER.
  • Step 3. Press and hold for 3 seconds.
  • Step 4. Release for 3 seconds.
  • Step 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 two more times.

All indicators should be lit up and you’ll see 88 minutes left on the Estimated Time Remaining display. This means a diagnostic test is being conducted. Once complete, you can check the error code that’s displayed to determine the issue.
